Let Them Hate… Just Make Sure They Spell Your Name Right

“If you’re not hated, then you’re never truly loved” — jessica walsh

I clutch onto that sentence like a nun clutching her rosary beads.

I repeat this mantra often. Especially now I have my debut novel, Wild Thing, out in the big, bag, opinionated world.

I’ve had people tell me good things, bad things, great things and shitty things. But you know what? This is where the never ending torture of being online comes into play.

It doesn’t matter what you do or who you are, you are never, ever getting back together going to please everyone.

But know this:

For every single person who dislikes what you’re doing, saying, wearing, writing, creating, there are dozens of people waiting in the wings that support you.

They just might not be as vocal as the haters.

There will always be haters.

People trying to tear you down. Reject you.

Those who are annoyed at your success, jealous of your ideas, envious of your ambition… and then there are those who will just be an asshole for assholes sake.

Don’t let them stop you.

Quieten you down, or shrink you.

Because what about all those you’ve influenced in a positive way?

The ones who you’ve inspired. The ones who you gave valuable advice too.

And what about the ones who changed the way they think because of something you wrote or said?

Or the ones who you helped give courage to?

Or maybe it isn’t even that deep.

Maybe you helped someone via your online tutorials, like applying make-up, or styling an outfit.

It’s those people that matter.

Because for every hater out there, there is someone you’ve made stand up a little taller.

Made them bolder, more confident and less afraid.

Gave them permission to try something new.

To just show up simply by being themselves.

You have the right to create what you want to create.

Just because someone doesn’t agree with the way you go about it, doesn’t make it wrong, or signal that it sucks.

It just means that it’s actually having impact.

This is why I write. I put my heart and soul into the stories I write.

So, if you’ve ever been on the receiving end of any hate or resistance, tell them it’s okay to hate… just make sure they spell your name right.

Because you aren’t going anywhere.
